Melons can be a difficult fruit to know when to harvest. That includes the Honeydew. I have found there are a few clues to help you know when your honeydew melons are perfectly ripe and ready to harvest from the vine.

If you are less familiar with honeydew you should be able to identify it because it has a round to slightly oval shape. The sweet flesh of honeydew is typically light green, while its skin has a white-yellow tone. Like most fruit, honeydew melons have seeds (which, in the case of honeydew, are very easy to scoop out).

Honeydew melons are in peak season from August to October depending on the zone where you live. We are in August right now and Marie’s first melons are ripening.

Honeydews are at their sweetest when left to ripen fully on the vine. Today we are going to teach you how to know when your melon is perfectly ripe and ready to eat.

Signs to know when to harvest honeydew melons:

First, ask yourself this question; Is it a large fruit and seems to have stopped growing?

The second is another question to ask; Is the melon heavy for its size.

Third, honeydew melons are green with little tan “scars” that become raised when they are ready to eat. Does your melon have scars? If so, it is likely the right time for you to harvest your honeydew melons.

Sometimes, even using these tips, you will pick honeydew melons that are a little crisp. I actually like mine like that, but if you like yours a little softer, then give them extra time (a few days) to ripen after you notice the above signs.

Want to know an interesting fact about honeydew? The ancient Egyptians regarded the honeydew as sacred and it was only reserved for society’s elite.
