How to Fasten Off in Crochet

Learn how to fasten off. Fastening off in crochet is a way to safely tie off a project so it doesn’t come unraveled later. This is always an exciting step since it is the culmination of all your hard work. I use it a lot when making my dragons as each little toe needs to be fastened off.

FASTENING OFF: After the last stitch, use scissors to cut the yarn, leaving a 6-inch end (or longer if you need it for sewing a piece on). Yarn over, draw the  hook completely through the stitch. Pull the end firmly to close.

The hardest part is keeping your tails from coming out of the piece later. You really want those to remain nicely tucked away. A secure way I have found to hide my tails is to first separate the yarn into two parts. After separating it, I like to take a small crochet hook and use it to guide the yarn in a zig-zag fashion, first one way and then the other. I then repeat this same process with the other half.
