How to sterilize Potting Soil (Mittleider Gardening)

Writer: Marie OvertonMarie Overton

The Mittleider Gardening Course Book provides many “recipes” for custom garden soil and it also teaches how to sterilize the soil. This is important because there can be bacteria, fungus and weed seeds hiding in the soil.

Sterilize soil Directions

Person with long hair sifting soil using a metal tray outdoors. They're wearing a colorful shirt and green pants, surrounded by dirt and dry leaves.

Begin placing the potting soil in a 1 inch deep baking tray. Don't make it much deeper or the heat may not fully penetrate the soil. I use my sawdust and sand mixture from the course book.

A woman in a kitchen stirs soil on a baking sheet in the oven. The stovetop is black, and the oven display shows 12:00. She appears focused.

Place the trays in the oven at 250 degrees for 45 minutes. When the time is up, stir the soil to expose more of it to the surface. Then, bake it for an additional 45 minutes. I then place it on my gardening table and allow it to cool for about 30 minutes.

It is now ready for you to add your seeds.
