Cookies in a Jar Mix

Cookies are one of the easiest treats in the world, especially when most of the preparation is done ahead of time. This chocolate chip cookie mix makes cookie-baking a cinch, much to the pleasure of my kids.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup + 2 tablespoons flour

  • 1 cup chocolate chips

  • 1/2 cup walnuts (optional)

  • 6 tablespoons brown sugar

  • 6 tablespoons sugar

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1/2 cup softened butter (1 stick)

  • 1 egg

  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Using a canning funnel to prevent spills, layer the ingredients into your mason jar in the following order.

  1. Nuts

  2. Chocolate Chips

  3. Flour

  4. Baking Soda

  5. Salt

  6. Sugar

  7. Brown Sugar

Once all of the ingredients are layered into the jar, top it with the lid and use holiday or event-specific decorations to decorate to your heart’s content. Go simple with a rustic piece of string, or go big with a square of fabric and ribbon. Perhaps add a little bling. Ensure you include a tag on how to bake the cookies.

Baking the Cookies:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

  2. Place the softened butter, egg, and vanilla in a mixing bowl.

  3. Open your cookie mix in a jar and disturb the brown sugar on the top layer. Angle your jar and carefully pour the sugars into your bowl by twisting the jar as you pour.

  4. Cream together the sugars and wet ingredients.

  5. Continue to pour the dry ingredients into your bowl stopping before the nuts and chocolate chips are poured in.

  6. Mix well.

  7. Finish pouring the jar contents into your bowl.

  8. Mix well.

  9. Using your hands or a cookie spoon, place cookie balls onto your baking sheet.

  10. Bake for 7 to 8 minutes. Until the cookies are just barely shiny.

  11. Remove from the oven and allow the cookies to cool on the pan for 2 minutes before removing them onto a cooling rack.

Note: If you overcook (let’s face it, we all do it), skip cooling the cookies on the pan and remove them from the pan to the cooling rack immediately.
