Wood cream recipe for seasoning Cutting Boards

Writer's picture: Marie OvertonMarie Overton

This wood cream recipe is perfect for seasoning wood. I love using wood cutting boards in my kitchen but with all the use they get I need to do a little maintenance if I want them to last.

How to Make Wood Cream

Step 1: Measure Ingredients

The first step is to measure my ingredients into a pint-size jar.

I add:

  • 2 ounces beeswax

  • 1 cup mineral oil (food grade)

  • 5 drops of lavender essential oil

  • 5 drops of rosemary essential oil

The beeswax gives added protection from moisture.

Mineral oil is food-safe and non-toxic. It penetrates wood fibers well and prevents the wood from drying out and cracking. Its primary limitation is that it isn't waterproof but that is the reason for the addition of the beeswax.

Both lavender and rosemary have antibacterial properties that are a benefit when seasoning cutting boards. It gives this cream a lovely scent without being too overwhelming. It is mild enough that no taste is transferred to your food.

Step 2: Heat

Place the jar in a boiling waterbath or a crockpot with the water up to 3/4 of the jar. This should be about where the oil fills. The important thing is to not get any water into the jar. Bring the water to a simmer and then drop the temperature to low and let the oil warm for 10 minutes.

Step 3: Cool

I remove the jar from the water and allow it to cool for 20 minutes.

Step 4: stirring

Next, I stir the mixture and continue to stir occasionally over the next 30 minutes.

Step 5: Storing

Store in a cool, dry, dark location and use within 6-12 months.

Step 6: Use

This wood cream can be used for any wood in the kitchen (cutting boards, bowls, spoons, etc) or out of it like for wooden furniture. It is nice because it maintains the wood's natural color, but it does need to be reapplied regularly.

Regular maintenance of your wooden kitchen tools is essential for ensuring they will last. By using this wood cream, you can keep your cutting boards in good condition and continue using them for years.
